The Town Hall of Ronda inaugurated this Friday the IV Mountain, Canyoning and Speleology Days with a simulated rescue on the edge of the Tajo. Firefighters, police and medical personnel participated in the operation, using a helicopter and drones.
The IV Mountain, Canyoning and Speleology Days in Ronda kicked off this Friday with a rescue demonstration on the edge of the Tajo. The simulation involved the Local Police, National Police, the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters of Málaga, and medical professionals from the Health Area of Serranía.
The councillor for Sports, Bernardo Crespo, thanked all the bodies for their collaboration and noted that the demonstration serves to show residents how an intervention is organised in a particularly challenging environment.
“This demonstration allows us to show the public how an intervention is organised in the face of an emergency in a particularly difficult environment,” said Crespo.
The exercise recreated the rescue of two people suspended in the area of the Puente Nuevo, a situation that prevented a conventional intervention from the bottom of the Tajo. For this, specialised high-altitude rescue equipment, a helicopter, and drones from the National Police, firefighters, and medical personnel were deployed.
The chief inspector of Zone 3 of the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters of Málaga, Cristóbal Rodríguez, highlighted the high complexity and danger of such operations. The deputy inspector of the National Police in Ronda, Paco Sánchez, praised the coordination among the different bodies.
The medical coordinator of the SUAP unit of the Health Area of Serranía de Ronda, Ana Gallardo, explained that this year the medical personnel actively participated in the rescue, accessing the Tajo to provide on-site medical coverage. Two mobile medical units and a support team with medical equipment were mobilised.
The days will continue throughout the weekend. This afternoon, from 16:00 to 19:00, there will be a free zip line open to the public, starting from the Balcón de Aldehuela and ending at the Jardines de Cuenca, on a first-come, first-served basis. Starting at 18:00, the Convent of Santo Domingo will host lectures and talks on mountain activities, canyoning, and speleology, as well as photographic exhibitions about caves and sinkholes in Andalusia and the Cueva de la Pileta.
On Saturday and Sunday, activities will take place for registered participants, including climbing, canyoning, hiking, and visits to caves and sinkholes.
