The Marbella City Council is tightening penalties to prevent the recurrence of images of bags on the street. Fines for violating the rubbish disposal schedule can reach 900 euros, and serious offences can amount to 1.7 million.

The Marbella City Council has launched a campaign to prevent this summer from seeing a repeat of the scenes of rubbish bags and waste scattered around the containers, which have severely damaged the municipality's image in the last two summers. The municipal ordinance establishes fines of up to 900 euros for disposing of rubbish outside the permitted hours, an infraction considered minor.

The governing team reminds that the regulations also prohibit leaving waste in public spaces, dumping it into the sewage system, or using containers for unauthorised materials such as rubble, furniture, or dead animals. Serious infractions, such as uncontrolled dumping of substances, can incur fines of up to 45,000 euros, and very serious ones can reach 1.7 million euros.

Video surveillance to monitor citizen habits

To ensure compliance with the ordinances, the Local Police has a network of surveillance cameras, consisting of nearly 350 monitors distributed throughout the municipality. These cameras allow for monitoring the disposal habits of citizens and detecting infractions.

Additionally, the City Council has renewed the informational signage to promote "the proper use of public spaces." In total, 80 signage elements have been installed: 50 informational signs about disposal hours, 20 about the obligation to pick up pet waste, and 10 about the prohibition of dumping.

Fines also for not picking up dog mess

The ordinance also penalises the failure to pick up pet waste in public spaces, classified as a minor infraction. Penalties can range from a warning to fines of 750 euros. This measure aims to keep the streets clean and avoid unpleasant odours, especially in tourist areas.

The City Council emphasises that the initiative is part of the municipal commitment to maintaining the city and protecting the urban environment. Residents and tourists will notice an increased presence of signs and, likely, a decrease in the accumulation of bags on the sidewalks. Those tempted to leave rubbish at inappropriate times should know that the cameras are watching and that the fines hurt.

The new measures come into effect immediately, just in time for the high season. The City Council hopes that the combination of surveillance, signage, and penalties will deter offenders and restore Marbella's image as a clean city that its merchants and residents demand.
