The Fuengirola City Council has executed €800,270 from Axis 4 of the Tourism Sustainability Plan, with nine actions in digitisation, mobility, carbon footprint, and management. The funds are 100% European.
The City Council of Fuengirola has executed €800,270 through the nine actions included in Axis 4 of the Tourism Sustainability Plan 'Fuengirola + Tourism. For a more sustainable and intelligent destination'. The plan is 100% funded by European funds under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.
The Councillor for Innovation, Isabel González, explained that the actions are organised into four areas: digitisation and Intelligent Tourist Destination, mobility and road safety, sustainability and reduction of the carbon footprint, and management and control of the plan itself.
The project with the highest investment is the GIS-City Twin or Digital Twin of Fuengirola, with €371,816. This tool integrates georeferenced information on urban planning, infrastructure, environment, mobility, or heritage to facilitate the planning and management of the city.
In mobility and road safety, €308,337 has been allocated to equipment for traffic control and calming: fixed speed control booths, educational radars, laser speed meters, and an electric vehicle.
The digital transformation includes the parameterisation of the Intelligent Tourist Destination software, for €16,699, with the creation of the DTI Management Entity, the Master Plan, indicators, and monitoring processes according to the methodology of the Network of Intelligent Tourist Destinations and the UNE 178501 standard.
“This action allows us to have a clear and structured roadmap to continue improving our tourism model in five fundamental areas: governance, innovation, technology, accessibility, and sustainability,” stated González.
To reduce the environmental impact of Marenostrum Fuengirola, over €33,000 has been allocated for the calculation, reduction, compensation, and verification of its carbon footprint for the 2024 and 2025 editions.
“We want Fuengirola to continue hosting major events, continue generating economic activity, and continue to be a cultural and tourist reference, but we want to do it with increasingly higher sustainability criteria. We want to demonstrate that tourism, culture, leisure, and sustainability can go hand in hand,” the councillor pointed out.
Axis 4 is completed with the adaptation to the DTI model according to UNE 178501, for €15,881, and with technical assistance and auditing work for the execution, monitoring, and justification of the plan, funded with €50,806 and €2,879 respectively.
“We do not want Fuengirola to be just a tourist destination that uses technology, but a destination that uses technology to improve management and the tourist experience,” González stated.
The nine actions are funded by European funds and affect municipal services that residents use daily, such as speed control on the streets or the management of urban information.
