Fuengirola makes helmets mandatory for scooters from October 1

The reform of the General Traffic Regulation comes into effect on October 1 with helmets mandatory for all electric scooter users, reflective vests at night, and a minimum age of 15. Fuengirola will review traffic lights to adapt them.

The Fuengirola City Council has announced that the reform of the General Traffic Regulation will come into effect on October 1, changing the rules for personal mobility vehicles. The Councillor for Mobility, Isabel González, has detailed the new regulations affecting electric scooter users in the municipality.

The regulation requires all drivers of these vehicles to wear a helmet without exception and sets the minimum age for driving them at 15 years. Additionally, wearing a reflective vest will be mandatory at night or in low visibility conditions, such as rain or fog. For those using scooters as a work tool, such as delivery drivers, the vest must be worn at all times.

“From the Fuengirola City Council, we consider it essential to inform citizens about this reform and, especially, about those aspects that directly affect mobility in our city. From October 1, all electric scooter users must wear helmets and must also wear reflective vests at night or when visibility conditions require it,” González explained.

The reform also modifies the operation of traffic light crossings: the flashing amber light will disappear when it coincides with the green light for pedestrians. The City Council will initiate a period of adaptation, review, and control of the city's traffic lights to adjust their timings to the new regulation.

“We have a computerized system for controlling traffic light regulation that will allow us to carry out these actions quite quickly and adapt the timings of crossings to the new conditions,” the councillor noted.

González has urged residents to be aware of the changes and incorporate them into their usual journeys. The new regulation will be applied throughout Spain from October 1, so scooter users in Fuengirola will need to adapt their equipment and their way of riding to these dates.
