The Estepona City Council offsets the €2,473.50 that Manuel Aguilar was due to receive from January to August against part of the €251,405.98 he owes. The councillor claims he has not received notification.
The Estepona City Council has signed a decree to withhold the compensation for attendance at council meetings and commissions from Vox spokesperson, Manuel Aguilar, to recover part of a debt that the councillor owes to the City Council, amounting to €251,405.98. The information, reported by Diario Sur, details that the mayor, José María García Urbano, signs the resolution based on a report from the municipal treasurer and documentation from the Provincial Collection Board of Málaga.
The decree does not specify the origin or date of the debt but indicates that it is in executive period, applying the method of offsetting recognised credits. This means Aguilar will no longer receive the €2,473.50 he was entitled to for his attendance at municipal bodies between January and August of this year, according to the remuneration set for the 2023-2027 term: €300 per council meeting and €30 per information commission.
“Examined the accounting statements of this City Council, and according to the documentation provided by the Provincial Collection Board of Málaga, it is verified” that Manuel Aguilar “owes the Hon. City Council of Estepona a total of €251,405.98”
The Vox spokesperson has stated that he has not been notified of the decree and is unaware of both its content and the reason for the debt. “The last notifications I received from the City Council were today and they were two requests for information I made as a councillor in December 2024,” the councillor declared.
The measure is supported by the General Collection Regulation, which allows for the extinguishment of public debts through offsetting with recognised credits in favour of the debtor, as well as by the General Tax Law and the Local Government Bases Law. Manuel Aguilar was the first deputy mayor and delegated councillor for the economic area from 2011 to 2019, and from February 2020 to July 2021, he held the position of general secretary of the Andalusian Court of Accounts. In the 2023 municipal elections, he headed the Vox list for the Estepona mayoralty.
