La Rada beach hosted the eighth edition of this non-competitive event on Sunday, July 26, with participants from 28 clubs and 75 independents.
La Rada beach in Estepona was the setting on Sunday, July 26, for the IX Virgen del Carmen Coronada Swimming Crossing, a sporting event that brought together 218 swimmers. Among them, 18 belonged to the Estepona Swimming Club, which organised the event along with the Estepona Town Hall.
The event, which is non-competitive and non-profit, featured participants from 28 clubs and 75 independent swimmers from various parts of Spain and Europe. The main objective, according to the organisers, is to promote swimming and encourage the participation of local and international athletes.
The day was divided into several distances: 300 metres, 600 metres, 1,400 metres, and 2,600 metres, in both female and male categories. In the women's 300 metres, Lilia Benfares Le Bon (CN Mijas) took first place, followed by Sara Moreno Sohlberg (CN Mijas) and Rocío Roncero Aguilera (CN Los Barrios). In the same male distance, the top spot went to Leo Muñoz Sánchez (CN Torremolinos), with Adrián Novac (CN Estepona) in second place and Javier Núñez Hormigo (CN Estepona) in third.
In the women's 600 metres, Alexia Monge Aixelá (CN Ciudad de Algeciras) claimed victory, ahead of Alicia Lozano Mandesis (CN Los Barrios) and Paloma Redondo Zamora (CD Natación Ciudad de Algeciras). In the men's category, Víctor Rodríguez Castro (CN Ciudad de Algeciras) was the fastest, followed by Stuart Owen Andrews Pereira (independent) and Daniel Rodríguez García (CN Algeciras).
The 1,400 metres women's race was won by Sara España Escobar (CN Axarquía), with Blanca Mena Orozco (CN Entrebahías) in second place and Emma Moreno Sohlberg (Natación Mijas) in third. In the men's event, Rafael López Ortega (CN Dos Hermanas) took first place, followed by Sergio Banderas Moreno (CDN Inacua Málaga) and Daniel Ramírez Melgar (CN Entrebahías).
Finally, in the women's 2,600 metres, Fátima Souissi Ayuso (CN Cádiz) was first, followed by Cristina Barbara Matesanz Barron (Resist4) and Julia Fernández Jiménez (CDA Al-Ándalus Torremolinos). In the men's category, Ángel Méndez Sarria (CN Entrebahías) triumphed, ahead of Carlos Rodríguez Ruiz (CN Ciudad de Algeciras) and José Luis Gutiérrez Rodríguez (Resist4).
Beyond the competition, the crossing has a strong charitable aspect. In collaboration with the Hermandad Nuestra Señora del Carmen Coronada, participants contributed non-perishable food items that will be donated to Cáritas Parroquial del Carmen. This initiative aims to combine sport with assistance to those in need in the community.
The Estepona Swimming Club, organiser of the event, positively assessed the participation and atmosphere experienced at La Rada beach. The event is becoming a summer fixture in Estepona's sporting calendar, attracting swimmers from across the province and beyond.
