The Vélez-Málaga Town Hall has issued a decree requiring landowners to clear and clean their plots due to the increase in vegetation from winter rains and the arrival of summer.
The Vélez-Málaga Town Hall has published a municipal decree urging owners of plots, parcels, and land throughout the municipality to proceed with their cleaning and clearing. The measure, which is part of fire prevention efforts, responds to the significant growth of vegetation recorded during the winter due to abundant rainfall.
The mayor, Jesús Lupiáñez Herrera, has emphasised the importance of acting responsibly in light of the imminent high-temperature season. “We want to anticipate possible risk situations and strengthen prevention, especially at a time when high temperatures and the accumulation of dry vegetation can increase the danger of fires,” the mayor stated.
The decree reminds that the obligation to maintain land in conditions of safety, health, and public decorum is outlined in Article 144 of Law 7/2021 for the Promotion of Territorial Sustainability in Andalusia, as well as in municipal urban regulations. Owners must carry out the necessary tasks to prevent the accumulation of dry vegetation, waste, and any situation that may affect the safety of people and property.
In addition to fire prevention, cleaning plots helps reduce the proliferation of insect pests and improves the urban image of the various areas within the municipality. The Town Hall has stressed that compliance with these obligations will prevent possible administrative actions.
In case of non-compliance, the Town Council may issue execution orders and apply coercive measures. If the work is not carried out, the Town Hall may execute it subsidiarily at the owner's expense, without prejudice to the opening of a sanctioning file.
Lupiáñez has called for citizen collaboration: “The best way to keep our municipality in good condition is to work together. Every action counts and contributes to making Vélez-Málaga a safer, more orderly, and attractive municipality.”
The decree is already available on the notice board and the municipal website, and will be disseminated through media and official channels to ensure awareness. The Town Hall will continue to carry out cleaning actions in public spaces while promoting the responsibility of owners in private lands.
With this initiative, the Town Council aims for the plots to be in adequate conditions before the months of highest fire risk arrive, a measure that affects all areas of the municipality, from the urban centre to the outlying districts.
