The town of Benahavís, in the province of Málaga, has been the scene of a misogynistic crime that has shocked the community. The Minister of Social Services, Families and Equality of Andalucía, Loles López, has condemned the alleged murder of a 45-year-old woman, which occurred on July 21.
This case has recently been confirmed by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, which had previously ruled out the possibility that it was a misogynistic crime. With this confirmation, the number of fatalities due to gender violence in Andalucía during the year 2026 rises to ten, and 36 across Spain in the context of partners or ex-partners.
The victim had no prior complaints and was not a user of the Andalusian Institute of Women (IAM). Additionally, it was reported that the woman had an adult daughter, and the alleged aggressor is currently in prison.
Reactions and support for the family
Loles López has expressed her “pain and disgust” at this event and has conveyed her support to Melinda's family, especially to her daughter. The minister highlighted that this new crime severely affects the Málaga community.
The Junta of Andalucía has numerous resources and programs to assist victims of gender violence, including psychological support, legal advice, and socioeconomic assistance. López emphasized the availability of the Andalusian helpline for women, 900 200 999, operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
A call for unity
The minister also urged all administrations and institutions, as well as the Andalusian citizenry, to work together against this issue. She called for coordination and loyalty among agencies to effectively combat gender violence.
Gender violence is considered a serious violation of Human Rights, with murder being the most extreme form of misogyny. This social problem primarily affects women who suffer these abuses.
