The specimen of Ficus lyrata known as 'the Ficus from Materno' was transplanted during the early hours of this Friday from the Avenida Arroyo de los Ángeles to the southern roundabout of the La Rosaleda shopping centre in Málaga.
The Ficus lyrata that presided over the median of the Avenida Arroyo de los Ángeles, next to the Materno Infantil Hospital, now has a new home. During the early hours of this Friday, workers coordinated by the Public Works Agency of the Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga City Council, along with the construction company Sando, carried out the transplant of the specimen to the southern roundabout of the La Rosaleda shopping centre, as reported by Diario Sur.
The work began at midnight and continued well into the early morning. The operation included lifting the tree, loading it onto a platform, and subsequently replanting it in the new location designated by the City Council's Parks and Gardens Department.
The specimen, a Ficus lyrata of considerable size and in good condition, is not commonly found in the urban tree population of the capital, although it shares the area with other specimens of the same species. Its relocation was necessary because its original location was affected by the works of the third section of the metro extension to the Hospital Civil.

With the tree now in its new location, the way is cleared for the diversion and replacement of affected services (water, sanitation, and others) that must be completed before the tunnel excavation begins, as detailed by the Ministry of Development of the Junta de Andalucía.
The operation, which took place without incidents, leaves the median of Arroyo de los Ángeles clear for the progress of the metro works. The Ficus now remains in the southern roundabout of La Rosaleda, where it will be under the supervision of the municipal Parks and Gardens services.
