Over 162,700 students from Compulsory Secondary Education, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training, and Adult Continuing Education will start classes on 15 September in Málaga. This academic year, which covers 313 educational centres, includes more than 123,637 students in public schools and approximately 21,300 in private subsidised schools.

On 21 September, classes will also begin for special regime courses in Languages and higher artistic education in Music, Dance, Design, and Conservation of cultural heritage, encompassing a total of 21,621 students. Earlier this month, 135,450 students from the second cycle of Early Childhood, Primary, and Special Education already started their classes, while other children under 3 years old began on 3 September. In total, there are 341,490 students registered in non-university education in Málaga for this month.
The 2026/27 academic year starts with a reduction of 1,026 students in the Secondary area compared to the previous year. This decline is attributed to the sustained decrease in birth rates in the province in recent years.
Teacher reinforcement and Vocational Training offerings
To address this reduction, the Andalusian Government has decided to maintain the reinforcement of the teaching staff, especially in areas that require attention to diversity. This effort aims to improve support for students with special educational needs and strengthen Vocational Training.
This year, there are 600 reinforcement teachers, allowing the public Secondary teaching staff in Málaga to reach a total of 9,982 educators. Vocational Training stands out as one of the Junta's priorities, with 36,581 students, an increase of 1,777 compared to the previous year, with 70% of them in public centres.
The Ministry has offered more than 22,100 new places in Vocational Training, focusing on distance learning, which adds up to 28,745 places in Andalusia. In total, there are 560 study options, including training cycles and specialisation courses, supported by 1,216 new teachers.
In terms of infrastructure, 96 public educational centres in Málaga are undergoing improvement works during the 2026/27 academic year, representing 112 actions with a budget close to 13 million euros. These improvements will benefit approximately 57,880 students, who will see their facilities upgraded.
Additionally, three expansions are being carried out in the province: at IES Fernando de Los Ríos, IES Los Boliches in Fuengirola, and IES Reyes Católicos in Vélez-Málaga. This year, a total of 109 renovation works in educational centres in the province have been completed or are planned.
