The City Council of Málaga welcomed this morning 35 Sahrawi minors, aged between 9 and 12, who will spend the summer in the province thanks to the 'Holidays in Peace' programme.
The mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, accompanied by the councillor for Citizen Participation, Migration and Development Cooperation, Mar Torres, and other members of the Corporation, received a group of Sahrawi children participating in the 'Holidays in Peace' programme this Wednesday at the Town Hall.
This solidarity initiative, which has been running since 1993, allows 35 minors aged between 9 and 12 from the refugee camps in Tindouf (Algeria) to spend the months of July and August in the province of Málaga. Of these, 14 will stay in the capital, while the rest will be distributed among other localities.
The organisation is managed by the Málaga Friendship Association with the Sahrawi People (AMAPS), along with the Andalusian Federation of Solidarity Associations with the Sahara. Present at the event were the president of AMAPS, Isabel González, and the representative of the Sahrawi Delegation in Andalusia, Sid Ahmed Dah Ali.
The City Council of Málaga collaborates each year with this project through the Area of Citizen Participation, Migration and Development Cooperation. For this edition, the City Council has approved a nominative grant of €5,000 to cover the minors' travel expenses.
Staying in the province offers these children an alternative for rest and healthcare during the summer, away from the harsh conditions of the camps. The host families, coordinated by AMAPS, take care of their daily needs and organise leisure and social activities.
The 'Holidays in Peace' programme has become a staple of the Málaga summer for over three decades, with participation that renews the solidarity commitment of households in the province each year.
