Málaga City Council has launched the 'Conecta_Málaga' plan, with 18 actions in three districts and an investment of 30 million euros by 2030, co-financed with European Feder funds.

Málaga City Council has begun the implementation of the 'Conecta_Málaga' plan, an ambitious urban regeneration strategy that will transform around fifteen neighbourhoods in the Centro, Cruz del Humilladero, and Ciudad Jardín districts. The programme, which has a total planned investment of 30 million euros by 2030, is part of the Integrated Action Plans (EDIL) and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (Feder).

The City Council obtained nearly 12 million euros in European funding, to which it will add an additional municipal contribution of 16 million to complete the actions and seek further funding through over-execution. As initial steps, the Local Government Board has approved the tender for two urban renewal projects: the regeneration of the Las Flores neighbourhood and the improvement of social infrastructure in García Grana, with a joint investment of 1.66 million euros.

The 'Conecta_Málaga' plan is structured around four main axes. The first is digital transformation and economic dynamism, which includes measures to support local commerce and the implementation of new technological tools. The second axis, sustainability and the environment, includes improvements to water networks and the installation of new clean points. The third, social inclusion, is aimed particularly at young people at risk of exclusion. The fourth axis focuses on the recovery of historical and cultural heritage to promote the regeneration of the neighbourhoods.

Among the specific actions already underway is the awarding of works to enhance the Historical Cemetery of San Miguel, as well as the second phase of the urban renewal of Lagunillas Street and Miguel de los Reyes Square, with an investment of over 2.4 million euros. These works will improve public space and strengthen the connection between different points in the Historic Centre.

The neighbourhoods that will benefit from the plan are La Unión, Santa Marta, Santa Julia, Los Palomares, Capuchinos, El Molinillo, La Merced, La Goleta, Lagunillas-Cruz Verde, San Felipe Neri, El Ejido, and La Victoria, in addition to Las Flores and García Grana. In total, 15 neighbourhoods that account for a significant population of the city.

The 'Conecta_Málaga' plan represents a turning point in the city's urban regeneration policy. According to municipal sources, the aim is not only to improve public space and infrastructure but also to promote social cohesion and economic dynamism in historically degraded areas. The actions will continue until 2030, with a phased execution schedule for tenders.

Residents of the affected neighbourhoods have shown their support for the plan, although some groups have requested that citizen participation in the design of the actions be guaranteed. The City Council has committed to holding regular meetings with neighbourhood associations to inform them of the progress of the works.

With this initiative, Málaga joins other European cities that are betting on comprehensive urban regeneration as a tool to combat inequality and improve the quality of life for citizens. The investment of 30 million euros, with significant backing from European funds, positions the city as a benchmark in the application of sustainable urban development policies.
