The Málaga City Council has awarded the repaving and improvement works of the Historic Cemetery of San Miguel for 2.6 million euros, as part of the 'Conecta_Málaga' plan.

Machines will enter the Historic Cemetery of San Miguel in Málaga in the coming weeks. The City Council has awarded the repaving and improvement works of this burial site for an amount of 2,652,958.60 euros, co-financed with European Feder funds.

The main contract has been awarded to the company Rofez Construcciones SL, which will carry out the work for 2,564,745.4 euros over a period of ten months. This amount is supplemented by the project management and health and safety coordination, awarded to Marina Uno SLP for 88,210.2 euros.

A comprehensive rehabilitation with heritage respect

The actions will focus on renewing the paving of all roads and pedestrian areas of the cemetery, especially in the area prior to its 19th-century expansion. A new ornamental lighting system will be installed, and the rainwater drainage network will be renewed and expanded to ensure proper evacuation of rainwater.

All materials will be compatible with the heritage character of the site. The aesthetics of the place, traditional materials, and historically and artistically valuable elements, such as sculptures, tombstones, and mausoleums, will be respected. During the works, there will be permanent archaeological supervision during earth movements.

The work will be carried out in two phases. This first phase addresses the oldest area, and a second phase will complete the work in the rest of the cemetery. The goal is to standardise the pavement and improve accessibility and safety of the site, which receives visits from both relatives and tourists interested in its heritage value.

European funds for urban regeneration

The project is part of the 'Conecta_Málaga' plan, a regeneration and dynamisation initiative that acts in three areas of the city: Centro-Norte, the Las Flores neighbourhood, and Cruz del Humilladero. This plan has obtained the maximum financial pathway for large cities in Andalusia, with 11,948,905 euros of Feder funds, which represent 85% of the approved public investment, estimated at 14,057,535 euros.

However, the complete plan contemplates a total investment of 30 million euros by 2030. The remaining 60% will be borne by the City Council with its own resources, about 16 million euros, aiming to maximise the use of European funds and apply for more financing through over-execution.

For residents of the neighbouring areas, this work will mean a significant improvement in the cemetery's surroundings, with more accessible streets and more efficient lighting. Furthermore, enhancing the Historic Cemetery of San Miguel reinforces the city's cultural offering, as it is one of the most prominent monumental cemeteries in Andalusia.

“This is a highly anticipated action that will allow the recovery of an emblematic space in the city, improving its accessibility and preserving its heritage richness,” municipal sources have stated.

The works will begin in the coming weeks, once the contracts are formalised, and will last for ten months. The cemetery will remain open to the public during the works, although there may be occasional access restrictions in the areas under construction.
