The Málaga Regional University Hospital has been designated by the Ministry of Health as a Reference Centre, Service or Unit (CSUR) for the treatment of Refractory Epilepsy in adults. This recognition allows the hospital to provide care to patients with the most complex forms of this disease, including those referred from other autonomous communities for specialised diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Recognition and Available Services
With the accreditation as a CSUR, the Neurology Service of the hospital expands its portfolio of services, which already included the CSUR for Multiple Sclerosis. This designation reinforces the role of the hospital as a national reference centre in the care of complex neurological diseases.
José Antonio Ortega, the hospital's managing director, highlighted that this accreditation is a recognition of the capacity of the Andalusian public health system to provide care in highly specialised pathologies. Ortega noted that it is the result of the joint work of numerous professionals committed to excellence in care.
Multidisciplinary Care Model
The designation highlights the trajectory of the Neurosciences Unit of the hospital and its multidisciplinary approach, which integrates various specialties such as clinical neurology, neurophysiology, advanced neuroimaging, neurosurgery, and genetics. This model allows for precise care, including advanced neuromodulation techniques that are exclusive to a few hospitals in Spain.
Pedro Serrano Castro, head of the Neurology Service, commented that refractory epilepsy affects those patients who do not respond adequately to conventional treatments, requiring a highly specialised approach to determine the best therapeutic alternative.
Additionally, the hospital has developed an innovative model to address rare and complex epilepsies, supported by personalised medicine. It has a specialised functional unit for epileptic encephalopathies and conducts various lines of research to improve both diagnosis and treatment.
Since 2020, the hospital has also coordinated the Andalusian Network for Clinical and Translational Research in Neurology, which brings together more than 150 researchers from Andalusian public hospitals to promote research in neurological diseases.
Finally, Serrano emphasised that the accreditation as a CSUR is just one aspect of the hospital's ongoing commitment to advancing research, innovation, and quality care for patients with refractory epilepsy.
