The Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga City Council have announced the transplant of a unique ficus on Arroyo de los Ángeles avenue. This action is part of the works for the third phase of the Málaga Metro extension, aimed at ensuring the conservation of a unique specimen in the urban tree population.
Operation and Planning
The operation will take place during the early hours of September 18 and will be coordinated by the Public Works Agency of the Junta and the Málaga City Council. Heavy-duty cranes and suitable platforms will be used to relocate the ficus, which will be replanted at the southern roundabout of the La Rosaleda Shopping Centre.
This ficus, scientifically known as Ficus Lyrata, is in good condition and is notable for its size and rarity in the capital's tree population. The City Council has chosen the new location due to its ideal conditions for growth and visibility.
Transplant Technique
The transplant will be carried out using the bare root method (Air Spade), which allows for the preservation of the tree's main roots without causing damage. This procedure follows a detailed study of the root system, ensuring the ficus's stability in its new location.
After the transplant, a monitoring and maintenance program will be established, which will include controlled watering and periodic assessments of the tree's vegetative response. These actions aim to ensure the preservation of a specimen of high environmental and heritage value.
The third phase of the Málaga Metro extension, which includes the Hospital Civil station, stretches for 510 meters from the intersection of Blas de Lezo and Martínez de la Rosa. The total length of the extension will reach 1.8 kilometers and has an estimated budget of 244 million euros, partly funded by EU Feder funds.
