Málaga City Council has accepted the sculptural group 'The Columns of the Sea' by Ginés Serrán as municipal heritage and will request the Port Authority to keep it at the entrance of the Port for another six months to a year.

The local government board approved this measure collectively on Tuesday, as reported by Diario Sur.
The proposal originated from the Culture department and was raised to the municipal governing body by the councillor in charge, Mariana Pineda, who explained that the donation is a "common and very desirable" practice. The agreement that the Port had with the artist was set to expire this Wednesday, 16 September, so the City Council will send a request to the president of the Port Authority, Carlos Rubio, on the same day for the pieces to remain where they are.
The transfer is being made at no additional cost to the City Council, as reported by the new spokesperson for the PP government team, Carmen Casero, who specified that the period will be one year. The City Council has not requested an expert appraisal of the work, so its economic value is unknown, although it will become part of the municipal inventory.
During that year, the City Council will keep a public debate open to decide whether the sculptural group should remain in its current location. "We want to keep the debate open, but we must be cautious with the absolute respect for the artist," indicated Pineda, who added that the public "has a year to decide if the work stays in that place, and if not, we will consider other locations."
The Culture councillor avoided commenting on the artistic value of the work and stated that personally she should not have "a technical opinion," although she highlighted that it brings values related to "Mediterranean Málaga." The artist's transfer document has 12,000 signatures of support, a backing that was already mentioned by the mayor, Paco de la Torre.
Pineda cited other works temporarily located in cities such as Madrid, with 'Julia' by Jaume Plensa, or Tony Cragg's in Valencia, and 'The Bay Lights' on the San Francisco bridge. The councillor insisted that the donation is incorporated into the municipal inventory and that the next step is the formal request to the Port.
