Costa del Sol Hospital Receives Grant to Humanise Its Oncology Waiting Room

MARBELLA, 03 AUGUST 2026. Costa del Sol University Hospital has been awarded a grant from the SPERantia Space Project, granted by the Andalusian Society of Medical Oncology (SAOM). This project, which receives support from AstraZeneca, aims to humanise the waiting room of the Onco-Haematology Day Hospital.

Dr. Marta Fernández Carcaño, a specialist in Medical Oncology at HUCS, has led the initiative, which has a budget of 20,000 euros. The purpose of this grant is to fund the design and renovation of the facilities in order to improve both the physical and emotional experience of patients and their families during the wait.

Objectives of the SPERantia Space Project

The objective of the SPERantia Space Project is to comprehensively transform the experience of oncology patients and their families. This will be achieved through various approaches and phases established in the humanisation programme.

SAOM will provide the hospital with the services of a specialised design and architecture studio, which will be responsible for drafting the technical renovation project and coordinating the material execution of the works.

Improvements in the Waiting Room

The transformation of the space will include a design aimed at eliminating the cold and institutional aesthetic of traditional hospitals. Elements such as natural and warm lighting, as well as ergonomic and comfortable furniture, will be implemented, providing individual seating and specific areas for rest.

Additionally, the design will consider the creation of differentiated microenvironments to make the wait more bearable. These will include intimate areas for processing difficult news, distraction points with reading materials and technology, as well as spaces for comfortable interaction among companions.

This plan focuses on improving the psycho-emotional quality of patients, seeking to transform the traditional perception of the waiting room into a therapeutic environment that promotes well-being. The aim is to mitigate the vulnerability and anxiety that patients experience from the moment they enter the hospital.
