The mayor of Málaga advocates for building higher within the city and for adding developable land in municipalities of the metropolitan area such as Cártama, Pizarra, or the Alhaurines. He also defends that residential land should not be allocated for tourist use.
The mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, defended this Friday that the city's growth should combine an outward look, with the incorporation of new developable land in the metropolitan area, and an inward look, with taller buildings. He stated this at the forum “Málaga in transformation: the new general plans”, organised by Diario Sur with the sponsorship of the Málaga City Council and the Municipal Urban Planning Management.
In his speech, introduced by the newspaper's director, Javier Recio, the mayor positioned housing as a matter of “great relevance” and suggested that, in addition to deciding how to use the territory, there needs to be a resolution on how to be agile. For De la Torre, that agility “is as important or more than making a good urban planning plan,” and such a plan “cannot last for years.”

Regarding the search for land for residential use, the mayor pointed out that there is “a small space to grow” in the capital and mentioned surrounding municipalities such as Cártama, Pizarra, or the Alhaurines, an option that, he noted, would be favoured by the planned improvement of transport frequency.
Within the city, De la Torre suggested that buildings should gain height and accommodation capacity, citing the Martiricos towers as an example. Among the measures already adopted by the City Council, he recalled the prohibition of allocating residential spaces for tourist purposes.
The mayor also listed pending issues, such as the utilisation of Repsol lands, overcoming the ring roads to allow growth, and improving neighbourhoods.
