The Vélez-Málaga City Council reminds that the tax ordinance already includes reductions of 50% for large families and 95% for vulnerable households. More than 1,400 families could benefit from these advantages.
The waste fee ordinance of Vélez-Málaga has included a 95% reduction for households in vulnerable situations and a 50% reduction for large families since its approval, as highlighted by the Councillor for Finance, Manuel Gutiérrez. Estimates indicate that 1,051 households could benefit from the 95% discount, while around 350 large families could qualify for the 50% reduction.
Gutiérrez explained that these reductions are not a new measure: “They were already included in the tax ordinance since its approval and are part of how this fee was designed in our municipality.” The councillor emphasised that the implementation of the fee responds to an obligation of the Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soils for a circular economy, which requires local entities to have a specific fee to cover the costs of collection, transport, and treatment of waste.
Among the groups that can apply for the 95% reduction are individuals receiving the Minimum Vital Income, the Minimum Insertion Income of Andalusia, certain non-contributory pensions, subsidies, and social or family emergency aid. “We wanted the ordinance to take into account that there are families going through particularly difficult situations and that, therefore, cannot face the fee under the same conditions as others,” Gutiérrez noted.
As for large families, the 50% reduction applies to both its general and special modalities, provided that the conditions established in the ordinance are met. The councillor insisted that “it is important for residents to know that these possibilities are included and that they can take advantage of them when they meet the requirements.”
On another note, the Vélez-Málaga City Council is maintaining open channels of dialogue with merchants, self-employed individuals, and business owners to review situations arising from the application of the fee in economic activities. Meetings have already been held with business and merchant associations from Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar, and cases requiring review, such as possible duplications, discrepancies in square meters of establishments, and other particularities, have been forwarded to the Collection Board. Information and guidance are also being provided to managers and advisors to help them understand the procedures and documentation needed to submit appeals.
“We will continue to stand by merchants, self-employed individuals, and professionals to ensure that each situation can be reviewed and to provide them with the necessary tools and information,” stated Manuel Gutiérrez.
The councillor concluded by reminding that “this is the first year of implementing the new fee, and we want any situation that needs to be reviewed to be analysed with all the data on the table. Each case has its circumstances, and each case must have its response.”
