Over 600 rowers from eleven clubs will gather on August 1 at Varadero beach. The Faro de Torre del Mar Rowing Club seeks to secure the title in Men's Veterans and maintain its dominance in Cadets.
Varadero beach in Torre del Mar will become the epicentre of traditional rowing in Málaga on August 1. The XIV Provincial League of Jábega Boats – Pepe Almoguera Cup will hold its penultimate event, the Torre del Mar Grand Prix, featuring more than 600 rowers from eleven clubs across the province.
The competition, organised by the Faro de Torre del Mar Rowing Club and the Traditional Rowing Association (ART), is supported by the Málaga Provincial Council for the provincial league and, for this event, is collaborating with the Torre del Mar Town Hall and the Sports Department of Vélez-Málaga City Council.
The Torre del Mar Grand Prix is one of the most anticipated events on the calendar and arrives at a crucial moment, as the results could be decisive for several championships. The Faro de Torre del Mar Rowing Club, the host, approaches the regatta at home immersed in one of its best seasons.
The Torre del Mar team arrives as the leader in Men's Veterans, a category in which they could mathematically be crowned league champions if they achieve the necessary results, defending the title for the third consecutive season. Additionally, they are defending their lead in Cadets, where they maintain a three-point advantage and aspire to win the championship for the second consecutive year.
In Men's Youth and Women's Youth, they hold the second position, remaining in contention for both titles, while in Men's Absolute and Women's Absolute, they arrive in third place with options to close in on the runner-up position. In the overall club standings, the Faro de Torre del Mar Rowing Club occupies second place, confirming the excellent collective performance of an entity that already has nearly 150 athletes.
The Deputy Mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia, highlighted during the presentation that "the Torre del Mar Grand Prix has become one of the most traditional and awaited sporting events of the summer." Atencia valued the club's growth since its inception, recalling that "it started with the hope of having a boat and today it is one of the reference clubs in the province."
The club president, Expedito Cruz, thanked the institutional support and encouraged locals and fans to attend the regatta. "We hope everyone has the opportunity to come to the beach and enjoy an event that has already become a benchmark for our municipality," he stated. He also highlighted the great sporting moment: "We can secure the title in Men's Veterans for the third consecutive year and we continue to fight for the top spots in several categories."
Cruz also acknowledged the work of rower Ana María López, the creator of the official poster for the event. "At a time when artificial intelligence is very present, we wanted to bet on human creation," he affirmed.
The Sports Councillor of Vélez-Málaga City Council, Manuel Gutiérrez, emphasised the growth of rowing and the club's work. "It is a sport that adds more practitioners every year, especially women, and from the City Council, we will continue to support initiatives that promote this sport and carry the name of Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar throughout the Málaga coast," he said.
The regatta will start at 16:30 at Varadero beach. Entry is free, and a great atmosphere is expected. The event will bring together sport, heritage, and tradition around the Jábega boats, typical vessels of the Málaga coast declared a Cultural Asset of Interest.
