The Plaza de la Constitución will host the 44th edition of the Vélez-Málaga Folklore Festival on Saturday, August 22 at 21:30, with free entry and participation from groups from Asturias, Periana, and the host city.
Vélez-Málaga will celebrate the 44th edition of the Vélez-Málaga Folklore Festival next Saturday, August 22, starting at 21:30. The event, which is free to enter, will take place in the Plaza de la Constitución and will bring together the Cuélebre Folklore Group, the San Isidro Verdiales Group from Periana, and the Vélez-Málaga Choirs and Dances.
Before the performances, the three groups will participate in a parade that will travel down Canalejas Street and the Orange Tree Promenade until reaching the Plaza de la Constitución. Bagpipes, tambourines, dances, and traditional costumes will serve as a prelude to an evening that will turn the city centre into an open stage for folklore.
From Lugones, in the Asturian municipality of Siero, the Cuélebre Folklore Group will arrive, founded in 2008 and with more than forty members. Their repertoire will bring the essence of Asturian folklore to the audience, with a special focus on bagpipes and tambourines.
The San Isidro Verdiales Group from Periana, founded in 1992, will represent the tradition of the Axarquía with the well-known comares style. The group has taken the verdiales to numerous stages across Spain and is a reference in the preservation of this cultural manifestation from Málaga.
The lineup is completed by the Vélez-Málaga Choirs and Dances, the host group and co-organiser of the event alongside the Culture Delegation. Throughout its history, the group has promoted the traditions of Vélez-Málaga in various parts of Spain and Europe.
This year, the festival reaches its forty-fourth edition. For the past two years, it has had its own date within the cultural calendar, becoming part of the summer programme “At the Foot of the Wall”, which has reinforced its character as a meeting space between local traditions and expressions from other regions.
The Councillor for Culture, Alicia Ramírez, has highlighted the importance of giving visibility to a historic event that is part of the cultural identity of Vélez-Málaga and has thanked the Choirs and Dances for their involvement in the organisation. For his part, the representative of the group, José Carlos López, has emphasised the opportunity to share with the public the traditions of Vélez-Málaga and the Axarquía, as well as to enjoy the folklore of other regions.
Paloma Bueno, also from the Choirs and Dances, has invited locals and visitors to enjoy “a night dedicated to our traditions, sharing folklore as part of the identity of Vélez-Málaga and as a heritage that deserves to remain alive from generation to generation.”
Entry is free until capacity is reached. The festival is part of the summer programme of the Vélez-Málaga City Council.
