The National Police and the Local Police have arrested a man as the presumed responsible for several fires set in the municipality. Mayor Jesús Lupiáñez has thanked the police coordination.
The National Police and the Local Police of Vélez-Málaga have detained the alleged perpetrator of several arson incidents recorded in recent weeks in the municipality. The arrest took place last Sunday afternoon during a joint operation, as reported by the City Council on Monday.
The detainee has been placed at the disposal of the judiciary, while the investigation remains open to clarify all the facts. Authorities do not rule out that more people may be involved and that further arrests could occur.
The fires, which occurred at different points in Vélez-Málaga with little time between them, showed signs of intentionality. The swift police action allowed for the identification and location of the suspect.
The mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, highlighted the effectiveness of the coordination between security forces. "The coordination between the different security bodies is yielding results and demonstrates this City Council's firm commitment to the safety of our residents and the protection of our environment," he stated.
Lupiáñez thanked "the extraordinary work carried out by the Local Police and the National Police, whose actions have been fundamental in achieving this important advance in the investigation." He also made a call for citizen collaboration: "We urge anyone who may have relevant information to communicate it to the Security Forces and Corps, as citizen collaboration remains essential for resolving these types of actions with all guarantees."
The City Council has not specified the exact number of fires attributed to the detainee nor the extent of the material damages, although municipal sources confirmed that all were intentional. The investigation continues to determine the causes and the modus operandi of the alleged arsonist.
Residents of the affected areas have expressed their relief at the arrest, after weeks of uncertainty due to the wave of fires. The Local Police maintain a surveillance operation to prevent new incidents.
