The opening speech by Paco 'El Apañao' and the children's speech by 12-year-old Erika Ramos Algarín kick off the Veladilla de San Miguel in the Plaza de Andalucía of Las Protegidas, including a tribute to Mari Alaminos.
The Plaza de Andalucía, in the Nerja neighbourhood of Las Protegidas, hosted this Saturday the speech that opens the Veladilla de San Miguel of 2026. The singer Francisco Gumersindo, known as Paco 'El Apañao', was in charge of the adult speech, while the young Erika Ramos Algarín, aged 12, delivered the children's speech.
Attending the event were the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo; the councillor for Popular Traditions, Elena Gálvez; the local mayor, Vanesa Gumersindo; and the president of the Neighbourhood Association of Las Protegidas, José Miguel Ortuño, along with members of the Municipal Corporation, the Justice of the Peace, and representatives of the local associative fabric.
The mayor congratulated the speakers and thanked the Neighbourhood Association for their work in maintaining the celebration. In his words, he highlighted
“the effort and dedication to keep alive a celebration deeply linked to the identity of Las Protegidas”and
“the magnificent atmosphere experienced in the Plaza de Andalucía, which once again demonstrates the affection of the neighbours for their traditions”.
The day included the presentation of the Award for a Lifetime Dedicated to Las Protegidas to María Álvarez, known as 'Mari Alaminos'. The event concluded with the XIV Meeting of Rociero Choirs José García Conejero 'Batalla', featuring groups from Nerja, Frigiliana, Almayate, and Málaga.
