The Archidona barracks hosts the flag raising and the unveiling of a monolith dedicated to retired civil guards. José Luis Lara, 90 years old, receives an award as the oldest veteran in the municipality.
The Civil Guard celebrated this Friday in Archidona the first provincial event in honour of the Virgin of Pilar, with a tribute to fallen officers and veterans of the force. The day, according to Diario Sur, began with the solemn raising of the flag at the barracks on Pablo Ruiz Picasso Street and continued with a remembrance of those who have been part of the history of the Benemérita in the municipality.
One of the central moments was the unveiling of a monolith dedicated to veterans. The plaque bears the inscription: "Archidona to the veterans of the Civil Guard. Example of vocation, service, and spirit of sacrifice".
The Government Subdelegate in Málaga, Javier Salas, explained that the celebration is part of the effort to bring these events outside the capital and to bring the work of the Civil Guard closer to different points in the province. "We want the public to approach the Civil Guard and know what they do and what they are dedicated to," said Salas, who defended the need to remember those who "have dedicated part of their lives to serving others".
The choice of Archidona has a special component due to the historical relationship between the municipality and the region with the armed institute. The mayor, Manuel Almohalla, recalled that the City Council had been trying for several years to host this celebration. "For us, it is a source of pride. The connection between Archidona and the Civil Guard has been very close for many years," he stated.
During the event, José Luis Lara, aged 90 and the oldest veteran civil guard in the locality, received an award from the elder brother of the Brotherhood of Humility.
The programme will continue over the coming weeks and will be mixed with the autumn agenda of the municipality. Among the proposals is a motorcycle route that, as Almohalla has revealed, already had around 500 registered motorcycles, in addition to sports activities, a solidarity barbecue with participation from Civil Guard units, exhibitions, and a display of classic vehicles linked to the Brotherhood of Humility.
"It is about giving visibility to both the events of the Patron and what we celebrate in the municipality," summarised the mayor. The event was also attended by the chief colonel of the Command, Roberto Blanes, and the territorial delegate for Housing, Youth and Land Planning, María Rosa Morales.
