The City Council of Antequera will soon begin the comprehensive restoration of the Capilla Tribuna de la Cruz Blanca, with a four-month deadline and funds from the Historical Heritage Area.
The City Council of Antequera will soon commence the comprehensive restoration of the Capilla Tribuna de la Cruz Blanca, a project that will last for four months and will be carried out entirely with personnel, materials, and funds from the Historical Heritage Area. The mayor, Manolo Barón, and the councillor for Culture and Historical Heritage, José Medina Galeote, presented the project alongside the monument this Thursday.
The work will include the installation of scaffolding to undertake the restoration of the structure, with repairs and replacement of elements that have suffered damage to their brickwork. Preliminary excavations conducted on the painted surfaces have detected successive layers of paint and suggest the possible existence of a pictorial layer over lime, as explained by the councillor, a circumstance that will need to be studied during the intervention.
The chapel, built around 1774 and attributed to the master builder Martín de Bogas, is municipally owned and dedicated to the Virgin of Socorro. Its location on Cruz Blanca Street, between the churches of the Holy Trinity and San Pedro, places it on the devotional route of Antequera's Holy Week.
“It is a much-desired project, the execution of which will address the conservation needs of the monument and beautify this access to the city centre,” stated Manolo Barón, who emphasised the municipal responsibility to care for heritage sites.
Medina Galeote highlighted the value of the façade and the need to act on the deteriorated areas of the brickwork, and stressed the municipal team's ability to carry out this restoration with its own resources, alongside other conservation efforts in the area.
The intervention will begin shortly and is expected to last four months, aiming to restore the original appearance of this site of historical and devotional heritage in Antequera.
