The mayor of Antequera, Manuel Barón, has declared an official day of mourning for this Tuesday. Flags will fly at half-mast in memory of the Antequera filmmaker.
The City Council of Antequera has declared an official day of mourning for this Tuesday, August 4, 2026, following the death of Antequera filmmaker and producer Juan Lebrón Sánchez, who passed away yesterday, Monday, in El Puerto de Santa María. Throughout the day, flags on municipal buildings and public spaces will fly at half-mast as a sign of mourning.
The mayor, Manuel Barón, expressed his condolences in a statement to the family and loved ones of the creator, whom he described as "one of the most distinguished sons" of the city. The mayor emphasized Lebrón's "extraordinary professional career" in the world of cinema and television, as well as his "permanent connection" with Antequera.
Born in Antequera on February 27, 1953, Juan Lebrón participated in some of the most significant audiovisual productions of recent decades and became a key figure in Andalusian cinema. His role as a promoter of culture, heritage, and the landscapes of the province marked a career that always looked towards his roots.
The bond with his hometown was evident in 1994 when he was the announcer for the Real Feria de Agosto de Antequera. However, his deeper relationship materialized in 1986 with his first film production: a documentary dedicated to El Torcal de Antequera.
In 2017, the City Council acquired the original 35mm master of that work, considered the most important recording made about the natural site. The document was deposited in the Municipal Historical Archive, ensuring its preservation and its definitive return to the city.
The mayor highlighted that Lebrón's passing leaves "a huge void" in culture, but also a legacy "of incalculable value" that will remain in the collective memory of the people of Antequera. "He knew how to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of El Torcal through his camera," he added.
The funeral chapel has not been confirmed by the council, which has requested respect for the family during this time. It is expected that tribute events will be organized in the city in the coming days.
