The National Police have arrested five individuals in Marbella who were impersonating officers to rob inhabited homes. They carried guns, silencers, and fake police equipment, amassing a haul of €400,000.
An itinerant gang specialised in violent robberies has been dismantled in Marbella as they were about to commit a new assault. The five detainees, who posed as police officers, carried five handguns, silencers, and ample ammunition, as well as vests, caps, and flashing lights to simulate their identity.
The investigation began in December following two violent robberies in Alicante, but soon linked the suspects to at least three previous assaults on the Costa del Sol. According to sources from the investigation, the group had logistical support in Marbella, where they temporarily resided and stored their materials.
Detainees Caught with Prepared Loot
The agents intercepted the suspects while they were travelling in a van through Marbella. Inside the vehicle, they found €31,500 in cash, five handguns, silencers, zip ties, frequency jammers, and bent license plates to evade identification. They also carried GPS beacons and handcuffs, indicating they planned to detain their victims.
The five arrested individuals have an estimated haul of €400,000 from five violent robberies in inhabited homes, committed between Marbella and Alicante. The Police believe they may be involved in more incidents, so the investigation remains open.
Searches in Marbella and Fuengirola
Following the arrests, four searches were conducted in properties in Marbella and Fuengirola. Six high-end vehicles and more materials related to the criminal activity were seized. Investigators do not rule out that some of these cars were used for the assaults or to transport the loot.
The detainees have been placed at the disposal of the judiciary and face charges of robbery with violence, illegal possession of firearms, document forgery, bodily harm, usurpation of public functions, and belonging to a criminal group. Additionally, the Police have requested two European Arrest Warrants for two other alleged members who are outside Spain.
“This is a very organized group that used extreme intimidation methods to access homes,” explained sources from the investigation.
Residents in the affected areas, especially in Marbella and the Costa del Sol, have expressed concern over how easily criminals impersonated authority. The Police recommend always verifying the identity of any officer who presents themselves at the home by calling 091 if there are doubts.
The operation represents a significant blow to organized crime in the province of Málaga, where this type of robbery with identity impersonation had become a growing threat. The five detainees remain in provisional custody as investigations continue.
