The Málaga City Council will propose to the Board of Spokespersons that the Debate on the State of the City be held on September 30. The session comes after a request from the municipal socialist group, which has forced the calling of a plenary that has not been held since January 2025.

The Málaga City Council announced this Thursday that it will propose to the Board of Spokespersons the holding of the Debate on the State of the City on the upcoming September 30, following the start of the political course. The initiative responds to the request from the municipal socialist group, which has exercised its right to call an extraordinary plenary under the Municipal Organic Regulations.

A debate that has not been held for over a year

The last edition of this extraordinary plenary took place in January 2025, more than a year and a half ago. According to municipal sources, the development of the debate will be addressed in the meeting of the board of spokespersons prior to the ordinary session this July. The City Council has communicated this through its social media, detailing that the proposed date is September 30.

The socialist spokesperson, Mariano Ruiz Araujo, requested the calling a week ago, arguing that “Málaga needs to stop living off isolated headlines and start seriously debating what kind of city it wants to be in ten or fifteen years.” The request was endorsed by all socialist councillors.

The opposition calls for a substantive debate on the future of the city

In his speech, Ruiz Araujo criticized the governing team for focusing on “isolated projects, grandiose announcements, and one-day headlines,” and called for a calm debate on the long-term city model. “The time has come to sit down and decide what city we want to build for the next ten or fifteen years,” he stated.

The Debate on the State of the City is an annual extraordinary plenary that allows political groups to assess municipal management and propose future initiatives. On this occasion, the PSOE has forced its calling, considering that the local government has not provided enough space for political debate in the last year and a half.

What does it mean for the residents of Málaga?

For the people of Málaga, this debate is an opportunity to understand the priorities of the City Council and the opposition for the coming year. The plenary, which will be broadcast live through municipal channels, will address key issues such as investments in infrastructure, housing, public transport, and economic development. Residents can follow the session, and although they do not intervene directly, their demands are often reflected in the interventions of the councillors.

The date of September 30 means that the debate will be held just after the summer, when political activity resumes strongly. The City Council expects the Board of Spokespersons to confirm the proposal in the coming weeks.
