Nico Sguiglia (Con Málaga) asks the City Council to guarantee the morning and afternoon hours of the municipal senior centre in Miraflores during the summer, following the evening closure in July that has generated local discontent.
The spokesperson for Con Málaga, Nico Sguiglia, has demanded that the Málaga City Council reopen the municipal senior centre in Miraflores in the afternoons. Users report that the facilities remain closed during the afternoons in July, a critical time due to high temperatures.
Sguiglia has described the situation as "unacceptable" and reminded that these centres are not just leisure spaces, but an essential resource to combat loneliness and heat. "We cannot leave the elderly without a place to seek refuge and socialise," he pointed out.
A city model that forgets the neighbourhoods
The councillor has linked this closure to a vision of the city that, in his opinion, prioritises tourism over local needs. "There is a showcase city for visitors and a very different one for those who live here every day," he stated.
Sguiglia has insisted that the City Council must take an active role in managing these facilities, without delegating all responsibility to associations. "There is a need for staff, air conditioning, and an adapted programme," he detailed.
Climate refuges for all citizens
The spokesperson for Con Málaga recalled that Podemos and Izquierda Unida have been proposing a network of municipal facilities open all day in summer for years. The initiative includes libraries, community centres, and senior centres as accessible "climate refuges."
For the residents of Miraflores, having the senior centre open in the afternoons provides relief from heatwaves. "Many elderly people spend the afternoons at home without air conditioning; this space is vital," explained a user who preferred to remain anonymous.
Sguiglia has urged the City Council to act immediately and to open a debate on the role of municipal facilities in all districts. "It is not just about keeping facilities open; it is about guaranteeing rights and combating loneliness," he concluded.
The Miraflores senior centre, located in the Bailén-Miraflores district, serves hundreds of elderly people. Its evening closure in July has led to formal complaints that Con Málaga has taken to the municipal plenary.
