Essayist Remedios Zafra, National Essay Award winner, will participate on Thursday, 17th September at 19:00 at the Unicaja Foundation Cultural Centre in Málaga. Entry is free until full capacity is reached.
The Cultural Classroom organised by Diario Sur in collaboration with the Unicaja Foundation and Victoria resumes its programming after the summer break. The next event will be on Thursday, 17th September at 19:00 at the Unicaja Foundation Cultural Centre, the former Episcopal Palace located in the Plaza del Obispo in Málaga.
The main speaker will be Remedios Zafra, essayist, writer and researcher at the CSIC Institute of Philosophy, awarded the National Essay Award for 'The Report. Intellectual Work and Bureaucratic Sadness' (Anagrama). She will converse with journalist Alberto Gómez about the relationship with time and speed, the difficulty of stopping to think, the effects of hyperconnectivity, and the transformation of perception through screens.
The session, titled 'The Joy of Thinking', will also address work and the widespread feeling of never being able to accomplish everything. In a recent interview with Diario Sur, Zafra summarised this tension: “We don’t get home to rest but to continue worrying about work.”
The conversation will start from the difficulty of waiting and thinking in an era where immediacy seems obligatory. Zafra has described how the fragmentation of work and technology turns manageable small tasks into a burden. She speaks of a “structural self-exploitation” and the need to learn to say “no”: “We perhaps need greater complicity and alliance to support each other in refusals.”
The dialogue will delve into anti-intellectualism and anti-feminism, two phenomena the author has explored in her research, and the growing obsession with the self. The discourse of self-help and therapeutic language has placed individual well-being at the centre, but Zafra questions at what point self-care can become individualism and whether a society obsessed with personal well-being also generates collective discomfort.
Zafra is the author of titles such as 'A Connected Room', '(h)adas. Women Who Create, Program, Prosume, Type', 'Eyes and Capital', 'Enthusiasm' (Anagrama Essay Award 2017), 'Fragile', and 'The Invisible Loop' (Jovellanos International Essay Award). Her most recent work, 'The Report', analyses bureaucracy, productivity, precariousness, and the loss of time for what requires concentration and creativity.
