Dr. Enrique Bauzano Poley, first resident of Clinical Neurophysiology at the Regional Hospital and creator of the section at the Materno Infantil, passed away on September 13 at the age of 79. The hospital and the SENFC have mourned his loss.
Dr. Enrique Bauzano Poley, a pioneer of clinical neurophysiology in Málaga and a reference in childhood epilepsy, died on September 13 at the age of 79, as confirmed by the Regional University Hospital of Málaga, where he spent much of his career. The Spanish Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (SENFC) has also expressed its condolences to the family.
Bauzano was the first resident physician in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Regional Hospital in 1975 and in 1982 he established the section for this specialty at the Materno Infantil Hospital. From 2002 until his retirement in 2012, he served as the head of the Clinical Neurophysiology Department at the Regional, as reported by Diario Sur.
The hospital highlighted his role in multidisciplinary collaboration with services such as Neurology, Neuropediatrics, Intensive Care, and Neurosurgery. “He always fostered multidisciplinary collaboration,” the centre noted in its farewell.
“He was a great colleague, a true gentleman, a visionary ahead of his time, an inspiration and a mentor to many Spanish neurophysiologists.”
He was a founding member of the Andalusian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (SANFC) and a pioneer in techniques such as video synchronized electroencephalography and neonatal electroencephalography. He authored three reference texts in Spanish: “Practical Guide for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Epilepsy in Childhood and Adolescence” (1995), “Practical Guide to Neonatal Neurology: Electroclinical Correlation” (1997), and “The Absence Seizure in Childhood and Adolescence” (2000).
The managing director of the Regional Hospital, José Antonio Ortega, has expressed his condolences on behalf of the management team and all the professionals at the centre. “We fondly remember his human and professional figure and his commitment to the hospital,” he stated.
The SENFC has recalled that Bauzano was a reference for new generations of doctors and “a great person and mentor to many of us.” The Spanish neurophysiological community bids farewell to one of the specialists who advanced the discipline in Andalusia.
