The municipality of Vélez-Málaga has started the 2026/2027 school year with 6,718 enrolled students, 3,921 in the capital, 1,532 in Torre del Mar, and 1,265 in the other areas. The Town Hall has invested over 2 million since 2023 to improve the centres.
The 2026/2027 school year kicked off this Wednesday in Vélez-Málaga with a total of 6,718 enrolled students in the educational centres of the municipality, according to data provided by the Town Hall. This figure represents a decrease compared to the previous year, when nearly 7,000 students were registered, concentrated mainly in the capital and Torre del Mar, while the other areas remain at similar levels.
Of the total, 3,921 students will study in centres in Vélez-Málaga, 1,532 in Torre del Mar, and 1,265 in the other areas. Among them are the 263 students from CEIP San Faustino in Benajarafe, who have returned to the classrooms after the holidays.
The mayor, Jesús Lupiáñez, visited this centre along with the councillor for Education, Lourdes Piña, other members of the municipal corporation, and the school principal, Silvia Ranea, to convey the Town Hall's support to the educational community on the first day of class.
“Today marks the beginning of a new school year for thousands of students in our municipality, and we want to wish them, their families, and all the teachers a good start to the year. It is an important day for our educational community and for all who are part of it,” declared Mayor Jesús Lupiáñez.
The mayor framed the day within the improvement plan for the centres that the municipal government has been implementing since 2023. During this period, the Town Hall has allocated over 2 million euros to the 19 centres of Early Childhood, Primary, and Special Education spread throughout the municipality, in addition to the two municipal nursery schools, La Fortaleza and Virgen del Carmen.
The actions have included playgrounds, sports fields, fencing, roofing, toilets, access points, and buildings, as well as security, accessibility, painting, and maintenance work. This investment is complemented by the installation of more than 100 air conditioning units in the municipal educational centres.
In the case of CEIP San Faustino in Benajarafe, the works have involved the renovation of the toilets, the improvement of 100 square metres of flooring in the preschool classrooms, the upgrading of the fencing around the premises, and the installation of new air conditioning units.
“There have been many requests we have made, and a lot has been done,” noted the school principal, Silvia Ranea, who thanked the Town Hall for its support and highlighted the work of the school staff.
Lupiáñez assured that the works have mostly been carried out during non-school periods to avoid interfering with educational activities and that the new school year has begun with the planned works completed. The mayor acknowledged that there are “many more to be done,” for which there is “a roadmap to follow.”
The school year thus begins with the improvement works already completed in the public schools of the municipality, which resume educational activities normally in all areas.
