The Vélez-Málaga Senior Council has resumed active ageing workshops after the summer break. The programme offers around 1,500 places at the Capuchinos and Torre del Mar centres and at the local councils.
The active ageing workshops in Vélez-Málaga resumed on 1 September after a two-month summer break. The Senior Council of the City Council has thus restarted a programme that is spread across the Municipal Centres for Seniors in Capuchinos and Torre del Mar and the various local councils in the municipality, with a total offer of around 1,500 places.
The councillor for the area, Juan Fernández Olmo, explained that the return of these activities represents a reunion for the participants. In statements released by the City Council, the councillor noted that the workshops are much more than a way to occupy free time.
“September is once again a month of reunion for our seniors, as the workshops return, which are much more than an activity to fill free time. They are spaces where our seniors learn, stay active, socialise, enjoy, and, above all, continue to play a leading role in the life of our municipality.”
The offer includes disciplines such as dance, choir, guitar, painting, recycling, cognitive training, new technologies, and theatre, among others. The activities are distributed across several population centres so that residents can participate without travelling far from home: Benajarafe, Chilches, Mezquitilla, Lagos, Trapiche, Triana, Caleta de Vélez, and Almayate, in addition to the two main centres.
The councillor emphasised the value of the camaraderie generated by these spaces. “We want our seniors to have opportunities close to home to learn new things, stay active, and, especially, to share time with other people,” he stated, before adding that the value of the workshops also lies in the relationships and friendships that are formed.
The response from users supports the continuity of the programme. During 2025, the occupational workshops recorded an average of 1,300 participants per month, according to data provided by the City Council. Fernández Olmo attributed this figure to the active nature of the senior community in the municipality.
Those interested in participating can find out more at the Municipal Centres for Seniors in Capuchinos and Torre del Mar and at the local councils, where the available offer in each area is specified.
