The Vélez-Málaga Town Hall opens the application period for vacant urban gardens for seniors, located on Aceituneros Street, from September 15 to October 15. Applicants must be over 60 years old and registered in the municipality for at least one year.
Seniors over 60 years old from Vélez-Málaga who wish to cultivate one of the vacant municipal plots in the Urban Gardens for Seniors can submit their applications between September 15 and October 15, 2026, inclusive. This has been announced by the Town Hall through the Senior Department, which manages these municipal-owned lands located on Aceituneros Street.
The call requires several conditions to be met: being over 60 years old, being a resident of Vélez-Málaga, and being registered in the Municipal Register of Inhabitants for a minimum of one year. A medical report must also be provided to demonstrate the physical ability to carry out agricultural tasks, being up to date with tax obligations to the Town Hall, and committing to care for and maintain the plot and its associated facilities.
Applications must be submitted within the indicated period and accompanied by documentation proving compliance with the requirements. The Councillor for Seniors, Juan Fernández Olmo, has encouraged the seniors of the municipality to participate in this initiative.
“These gardens are much more than a space to plant and harvest. They are meeting places, spaces for coexistence and activity, where our seniors can enjoy their time, stay active, and share a hobby with others,” declared Fernández Olmo.
The councillor added that the Town Hall “continues to bet on offering our seniors alternatives that contribute to an active and healthy life, and urban gardens are a magnificent example of this.” Along the same lines, he noted that “contact with the earth, daily care of the plants, and having a personal space to cultivate are activities that generate excitement.”
The Urban Gardens for Seniors are part of municipal initiatives for active aging, healthy habits, and social participation. In addition to horticulture, these spaces serve as meeting points to share knowledge and leisure time among users.
Fernández Olmo insisted that “the important thing is that our seniors continue to have spaces where they feel useful, active, and accompanied. These gardens embody precisely those values: activity, coexistence, health, and also the pride of caring for something that we can see grow with our own hands.”
The deadline to apply for one of the vacant plots ends on October 15, 2026. Interested individuals should contact the Senior Department of the Vélez-Málaga Town Hall to submit the required documentation.
