The María Zambrano Foundation schedules six days in October with Rocío Márquez, Niño de Elche, Pedro G. Romero, and Nieves Rosales. The workshops and performances will be held at the foundation's headquarters and the Centre of Exile.
The María Zambrano Foundation has organised the second Flamenco and Thought Days, which will take place on 7, 8, 15, 22, 29, and 30 October at its headquarters in Vélez-Málaga and at the Centre of Exile. The cycle, coordinated by Jana Pacheco, is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and in collaboration with the Vélez-Málaga City Council.
The Councillor for Culture, Alicia Ramírez, has stated that the programme expands the spaces from which to approach the legacy of the philosopher: "María Zambrano taught us that thought can also arise from poetry, emotion, and experience. These days propose precisely that dialogue: to approach her work from flamenco, from the body, from creation, and from contemporary voices that have much to contribute."
The managing director of the Foundation, Luis Ortega, explained that the cycle arises from a question linked to Zambrano's work: what happens when the voice of philosophy meets the word of song. "We want to explore what happens when we put María Zambrano's thought in conversation with a language like flamenco, which arises from experience, emotion, memory, and word," he affirmed.
The academic secretary of the Foundation, Alicia Berenguer Vigo, recalled that Zambrano would fall asleep in her childhood listening to "nanas" that were actually "cante jondo", a music that, according to the philosopher, "does not pass through reason, but is born directly from the innermost being."
The programme will kick off on Wednesday 7 October with the workshop Emociones a compás, taught by Noemí Martínez Chico from 17:00 to 19:00 hours. At 19:00 there will be an institutional presentation, followed by a conversation with Rocío Márquez and an open dialogue with the audience.
On Thursday 8 October, the workshop will continue, and starting at 19:00, Niño de Elche will offer a performance at 19:15, followed by a conversation and discussion. On 15 October, from 19:15, Pedro G. Romero and Alicia Navarro will feature in a meeting about artistic creation, flamenco, dance, popular culture, and contemporary thought.
On 22 October, from 19:00 to 20:30, choreographer Nieves Rosales will present Cuerpos del Exilio, a performance about uprooting, wandering, and the search for an inner home in dialogue with the experience of exile and Zambrano's thought. On 29 October, Noemí Martínez Chico will return with the workshop Flamenco al compás at the Centre of Exile. The cycle will conclude on 30 October.
The days address flamenco as a space for thought and knowledge, connecting Zambrano's poetic reason with disciplines such as word, body, memory, exile, identity, and emotion.
