The Vélez-Málaga City Council has responded to opposition claims and explained that each taxpayer will have their own payment deadline, which will begin after individual notification. The process is carried out through three different channels.
The Councillor for Finance of Vélez-Málaga, Manuel Gutiérrez, appeared this Thursday to clarify the notification and payment process for the waste tax, after some opposition members spread information that, according to the councillor, is causing confusion among residents.
Gutiérrez has strongly denied that notifications for the tax are not being issued and insisted that the process is already underway. "It is not true that notifications are not being sent for any charges," he stated, adding that "the settlements are available, the notification process is being carried out, and each resident will have their own payment deadline from the moment their settlement is notified to them."
The municipal official emphasised that there is no common deadline for all taxpayers. The voluntary payment period begins for each resident at the moment they receive their individual notification, so the date each person should consider is that of their own communication.
The notification is being carried out through three different channels. Legal entities and professionals required to interact electronically with the Administration will receive notifications electronically. For individuals, when they have the means and circumstances that allow it, the electronic channel will also be used. In other cases, the notification will be made on paper, with delivery and acknowledgment of receipt at the taxpayer's home.
The councillor reminded that the General Tax Law, in its article 62.2, sets the deadlines: settlements notified between the 1st and the 15th can be paid until the 20th of the following month, while those notified between the 16th and the last day of the month can be paid until the 5th of the second month thereafter.
"It is very simple: each resident will have their deadline, and that deadline starts counting from the moment they receive their notification. There is no single deadline for everyone. That is why we ask that no more confusion is generated and that residents pay attention to the communication they receive, where they will have all the necessary information," Gutiérrez indicated.
The waste tax responds to an obligation established by the Government of Spain through the Law 7/2022, of April 8, on waste and contaminated soils for a circular economy. This regulation requires local entities to implement a specific and differentiated tax that reflects the real cost of waste management. In the case of Vélez-Málaga, the City Council has delegated the management and collection of this tax to the Provincial Collection Board.
Residents who have questions about their settlement or need information can visit any of the service points of the Board in person. Specifically, a specialised office has been set up at the Wholesale Market of Vélez-Málaga, on Estación Street, in addition to the Board's offices in Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar. At these points, they can request information and, when applicable, obtain the receipt for their settlement.
