The Vélez-Málaga City Council announces the completion of the redevelopment works on Calle Copo in Torre del Mar, with an investment of €177,466 and accessibility improvements.
The first deputy mayor of Vélez-Málaga and deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia, and the councillor for Infrastructure, Jesús María Claros, reported this Tuesday on the conclusion of the improvement works on Calle Copo, in the coastal area. The project, carried out through the Agricultural Employment Promotion Programme (PFEA), involved an investment of €177,466.66.
The works, which took about three months, affected an area of nearly 640 square metres, with the renewal of pavements and sidewalks. The aim was to improve accessibility and comfort for residents in this area of Torre del Mar, as explained by municipal officials.
Pérez Atencia highlighted the transformation of the Poniente neighbourhood, a fishing district integrated into the urban area. “Residents remember that the last works carried out in this area had to be paid for in instalments to the City Council. Just think how much time has passed and how things have changed,” he pointed out.
“Today we have been able to carry out the redevelopment of Calle Ancla, Vela, Caracola, Poniente and now Calle Copo,” he added.
The intervention included the planting of nine trees in tree pits located outside the main sidewalk area to prevent future damage from roots. The existing parking has also been maintained, preserving the angled parking spaces.
The councillor for Infrastructure detailed that the works involved four skilled workers and thirty labourers. The sidewalk has been expanded following the PFEA model in Torre del Mar, with the characteristic blue and white finish and a special emphasis on accessibility.
The work on Calle Copo is part of the PFEA 2025, with a total budget of €718,740, over €471,000 of which is allocated to labour and about €236,000 to materials and machinery. The programme has included works in other areas of the municipality such as Chilches, Calle Montaño, Los Íberos, Benajarafe, Paraíso del Sol and Ruta de los Bandereros, as well as interventions in Vélez-Málaga city centre, such as Calle Huerto Vicaría, Calle Tenería and Avenida de las Naciones.
Claros announced that the second phase of Calle Doctor Fleming is nearing completion, expected to finish between late October and November, and that the third phase is preparing for tender. He also announced that the City Council has included in a new PFEA the continuation of the renewal of Calle Copo, addressing the pending section.
“We are going to continue with the same sidewalk in the southern area that needs to be renewed, expanding it and reorganising the angled parking to achieve a greater number of parking spaces,” he concluded.
