The return to classrooms in the province of Málaga sees 6,148 fewer students than last year, but adds 4,309 reinforcement teachers in the public network. The ratio in Early Childhood drops to 22 students per class.
The province of Málaga kicks off the 2026/27 school year with 341,490 students in non-university education spread across 1,237 educational centres (public, private and concerted), according to the Andalusian Government Delegation in Málaga. 92.6% of the students study in publicly funded centres: 252,269 in public education (73.8%) and 64,049 in concerted education (18.7%).
This figure represents 6,148 fewer students than the previous year in the second cycle of Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary, marking the largest decline in the entire historical series, due to the drop in birth rates. Despite this decrease, the public workforce in the province reaches 19,489 teachers, with a specific reinforcement of 4,309 staff in the public network, as detailed by Diario Sur.
Of these reinforcements, 2,096 will be allocated to support students with special educational needs and diversity programmes; 1,216 will expand the Vocational Training offer; 705 will strengthen mathematical and reading skills; and 292 will be assigned to digitalisation. This investment, co-financed with European funds, amounts to 238 million euros.
Attention to diversity is one of the priorities. The team of specialists in Málaga exceeds 2,562 professionals (counsellors, teachers of Hearing and Language, Therapeutic Pedagogy and PTIS), 220 more than last year and 52.1% more than in 2018/19. Notably, the reinforcement in Therapeutic Pedagogy reaches 1,096 teachers, and the PTIS total 641 staff.
“Despite having fewer students, the Andalusian Government will again reinforce the teaching staff, especially those attending to diversity,” officials from the Junta state.
As a new feature, 31 schools in Málaga are introducing three-year classrooms in the second cycle of Early Childhood with a maximum ratio of 22 students per class, compared to the 25 set by state law. This measure, agreed with the unions CSIF, ANPE and UGT, also applies to concerted schools and will gradually extend to Early Childhood and Primary.
The incorporation calendar begins on 10 September for 135,450 students in the second cycle of Early Childhood, Primary and Special Education. On 15 September, 162,714 students from Secondary, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training and other teachings will join. On 21 September, 21,621 students from special language and higher artistic education will start. Students under three years old began on the 3rd.
Regarding assistance, the Junta allocates nearly 1 billion euros in scholarships, meal subsidies, school transport and free textbooks, benefiting over 171,800 students in Málaga. The average aid per family is 860 euros.
