El Borge Town Hall has declared three days of official mourning for the death of Juan José Martín Hermoso, aged 31, in an accident on the A-33 in Yecla.
The Town Hall of El Borge has declared three days of official mourning for the passing of Juan José Martín Hermoso, a local resident aged 31, in a traffic accident that occurred last Monday on the A-33 motorway, as it passes through Yecla (Murcia).
The mayor's decree, signed this Tuesday by Raúl Vallejo (PSOE), establishes that the mourning will be observed on 25th, 26th and 27th August. In the document, the Town Council expresses its “deep dismay and sorrow” over the incident and conveys its “affection, support and solidarity” to the family and loved ones of the young man.
During these three days, flags on municipal buildings will fly at half-mast and all public festive events organised by the Town Hall will be suspended, as well as any institutional events that may be incompatible with the mourning declaration.
The deceased belonged to a well-known family in El Borge, linked to the local hospitality industry and who run the municipal pool restaurant, according to municipal sources. He was the second of three siblings and had no children. His body will be cremated in Vélez-Málaga, according to sources close to the family.
The accident occurred on Monday 24th August at kilometre 62 of the A-33, heading towards Murcia. The Emergency Coordination Centre 112 of the Region of Murcia received a dozen calls from 13:51 regarding an incident involving a car and a truck.
An ambulance from 061 was dispatched to the scene, where paramedics could only confirm the death of the 31-year-old man. The operation also involved personnel from the Guardia Civil, Yecla Local Police, firefighters from the Fire and Rescue Consortium of the Region of Murcia, and Road Maintenance staff.
Initial reports suggest that the victim was alongside his car on the shoulder when he was struck by the heavy vehicle, which also hit the car and the guardrail. The exact circumstances will need to be determined during the traffic investigation.
The poor mobile phone coverage in the area initially hampered communications with Emergency Services. Both vehicles ended up on the shoulder.
Expressions of sorrow have transcended municipal boundaries. The Town Hall of Almáchar, a neighbouring town, has issued an institutional message: “We join in the grief of our sister municipality of El Borge and extend all our affection, support and solidarity to its family members, friends, and loved ones during these very difficult times”.
In a small town where the deceased's family is well-known, the news has prompted numerous expressions of affection. “El Borge stands united in remembrance and respect for our neighbour,” summarised the Town Hall in its statement.
