Almáchar celebrates the 56th Ajoblanco Festival with activities and tradition

Almáchar is preparing for its popular Ajoblanco Festival, which will take place next Saturday, September 5th, marking the 56th edition of this traditional event. The festival, declared a Festival of Tourist Singularity and of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia, has established itself as a central cultural and festive meeting point in the Axarquía municipality.

Celebration and local sustainability

The territorial delegate for Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Laura Soto García, presented the festival alongside the mayor of Almáchar, Antonio Yuste. Soto highlighted that this event showcases the gastronomic culture, particularly linked to the muscat grape, and plays a vital role in boosting the local economy by promoting the consumption of local products.

It is estimated that around 800 producers in the region cultivate about 1,700 hectares of vineyards. In Almáchar, the vineyard area covers around 256 hectares, focusing on the production of grapes for drying, underscoring the importance of this variety for both wine production and consumption as table grapes.

Festival activities

Mayor Yuste, in his speech, thanked the institutional support and shared details about the activities planned for the event. A large influx of visitors is expected, with over 4,000 litres of ajoblanco to be distributed, which will be prepared by local residents.

To facilitate access, free shuttle buses will be provided from Vélez-Málaga. The day will begin at ten in the morning and will feature various activities, including learning workshops about ajoblanco, guided tours of the old town, and a travelling exhibition of the 5th 'Windows to Art and Muscat' Painting Competition.
