The mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, visited the headquarters of AFEDAC and committed the support of the City Council to the entity, which assists patients and families throughout the region.
The mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, visited the headquarters of AFEDAC on Monday to mark World Alzheimer’s Day. The day included an institutional event, a tour of the therapies offered at the centre, and the celebration of the I Regional Social Work Meeting, an initiative to strengthen coordination between the health and social sectors.
Also participating in the visit were the provincial deputy for Assistance Centres, Third Sector and International Cooperation, Francisco José Martín; the director of the centre, Cecilia Mazuela; the deputy mayor for Social Welfare, Alberto Arana; the councillor for Family and Seniors, María Sierras; and the councillor for Health, María Luisa Enrile.
Barón highlighted that Antequera has a specialised centre for the care of people with Alzheimer’s and praised the collaboration between the City Council, the Málaga Provincial Council and the North Málaga Health Area. The mayor reaffirmed the municipal commitment to continue working for the inclusion and care of those affected.

The mayor also joined the national slogan for this commemoration, "No is no longer an answer".
The director of AFEDAC expressed gratitude for the support from institutions, health professionals and social services, caregivers, and those who have accompanied the entity. Mazuela explained that the I Regional Social Work Meeting arose from the need to unite the health and social sectors to improve care, and conveyed the families' demand for easier access to new treatments in the early stages of the disease.
The provincial deputy acknowledged the City Council of Antequera's commitment to social services and emphasised the regional dimension of AFEDAC, which also serves residents from surrounding municipalities. Martín recalled the support from the Provincial Council through grants and the donation of a vehicle for transporting users, and stressed the need to care for caregivers, who are mostly women.
After the speeches to the media, the institutional representatives toured the operational centre to learn about the therapies and the daily work of professionals with patients and their families.
