The City Council of Antequera completes the improvement of accessibility at the Bullring, with an investment of nearly €15,000, ahead of the celebrations for the Real Feria de Agosto.
The City Council of Antequera has taken advantage of the summer months to adapt the Bullring for people with reduced mobility. The project, which cost nearly €15,000, has removed architectural barriers and created an accessible route from the Puerta del Sol to the sun and shade seating areas.
The mayor, Manolo Barón, visited the works on Tuesday alongside the deputy mayor for Major Festivals, Elena Melero; the councillor for Culture and Historical Heritage, José Medina Galeote; and the councillor for Accessibility, Sara Ríos. They have all coordinated an intervention that involved the work of the team from the Historical Heritage Area.
The works included the removal of steps, the installation of two ramps, a second reserved space for wheelchairs in the seating areas, and the complete adaptation of a toilet. Several doors and internal passages have also been widened to improve flow and safety at entrances and exits, especially during events with large crowds.
Manolo Barón highlighted the complexity of adapting a 19th-century heritage building to current needs. “We are making a significant commitment to accessibility and to one of the most emblematic buildings in Antequera and one of the most unique bullrings in Andalucía,” he stated.
The intervention benefits not only wheelchair users but also the elderly and those who move with walkers, canes, or crutches. The route from the Puerta del Sol to the seating areas allows for traversing that area without encountering steps.
The mayor thanked the work of the technical architect from the Historical Heritage Area, Justo Muñoz, and the municipal team, who completed the works in a short timeframe. Only painting touches remain, which will be finalised before the Real Feria de Agosto, when the bullring will host the bullfighting festivities.
