Mayor Margarita del Cid presents a linear reduction of 12.5% that will come into effect on January 1, 2027, adding to the 20% applied since 2023. A household that previously paid 175 euros will now pay 122.47.
The Torremolinos Town Hall will implement a new reduction of 12.5% in the waste tax starting from January 1, 2027. The measure is linear for households, businesses, and industries, and adds to the 20% reduction in place since 2023, resulting in a total cut of 32.5% since the current government team took office.
Mayor Margarita del Cid presented the proposal accompanied by the entire government team. According to her, an economic report supports that the projected revenue from the new rates will cover the cost of waste collection, transport, and treatment services in 2027 without generating a deficit.
“In that context, Torremolinos is going against the tide: we are lowering the waste tax again”
Del Cid framed the decision within a context of increases in other cities. She cited a study by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) published in July 2025, which analysed the evolution of waste taxes in Spanish capitals since 2023 and detected an average increase of 30.6% in the municipalities studied.
The mayor detailed the impact of the two reductions with specific examples. A household that before the first reduction paid 175 euros will now pay 140 euros since 2023, and with the new rate will pay 122.47 euros starting in January 2027. In another tier, a household that paid 300 euros has gone down to 240 euros in 2023 and will pay 209.95 euros with the rate set for 2027. The annual savings compared to what was paid before the first reduction is 52.53 euros in the first case and 90.05 euros in the second.
“This represents an annual saving of 52.53 euros in the first case and 90.05 euros in the second compared to what was paid before the first reduction, with a cumulative reduction of over 30%”
The Town Hall is also working on municipal regulations to better dimension the generation of domestic waste and that from commercial and industrial activities throughout 2027. The aim is to distribute costs that reflect the tourist reality of Torremolinos.
“We are a tourist city. Our economic activity, the arrival of visitors, and the various uses of properties influence waste generation and service needs”
Del Cid also referred to commitments to protect employment and service quality included in the agreement reached with current workers. Regarding the continuity of reductions, she stated that the intention is for the new decrease to continue as cost studies and improvements in distribution allow.
The new rate will come into effect on January 1, 2027 and will be applied linearly to the bills of households, businesses, and industries in Torremolinos.
