The Town Hall of Antequera hosted this Thursday the presentation of 'Antequera and its State Police: 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries', a work by Agustín Flores Aragón published by the City Council. The mayor, Manolo Barón, presided over the event alongside police officials from the city and Málaga.

The Town Hall of Antequera hosted on the afternoon of this Thursday 1st October the presentation of the book 'Antequera and its State Police: 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries', a work by Agustín Flores Aragón and published by the Antequera City Council. The publication reconstructs the history of public safety in the city and the evolution of the various state police forces.

The event was presided over by the mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, alongside the director of the Municipal Historical Archive and the Antequera City Museum (MVCA), José Escalante. Also present were the chief inspector responsible for the National Police Station of Antequera, Marcos Romarís, and the newly appointed chief commissioner of Málaga, Roberto Rodríguez.

During his speech, Barón highlighted the research work carried out by Flores in the Municipal Historical Archive of Antequera and other documentary centres, linking the work to the author's professional trajectory and his dedication to public service.

The Mayor emphasized the connection of this work with the author's professional trajectory and his dedication to public service, underscoring the value of a publication that brings the history of the National Police and its antecedents in Antequera closer to the citizens.

The research is supported by the analysis of thousands of documents preserved in the Municipal Historical Archive and other reference centres. Based on these sources, the author reconstructs the establishment and transformations of police forces in the city, the periods in which they performed their functions, and the political and social context in which they operated.

Although the title focuses on the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, the book also addresses the antecedents of the police organization in the 18th century. Its journey includes the period of Napoleonic occupation, the creation of the General Police of the Kingdom in 1824, and the successive transformations of the institution until its contemporary configuration.

The publication covers aspects of daily life related to public safety, such as the challenges of banditry, political tensions, neighbourhood surveillance, relations with the Army, and legal and administrative changes. Alongside this institutional evolution, it recovers the work of wardens, neighbourhood mayors, commissioners, superintendents, and agents, as well as the difficulties and resources with which they carried out their responsibilities.

Agustín Flores Aragón brings to this work his own experience as a police officer. He joined the institution in 1977 and retired in 2021, after 44 years of uninterrupted service, a career during which he experienced various stages of transformation of the force.

With the publication of this work, the Town Hall of Antequera contributes to the dissemination of documentary heritage and local history, bringing to the public a research that expands knowledge about the construction of public safety in the city.
