The cultural cycle 'Torremolinos and Giants' kicks off its new edition with photographer Cristina García Rodero and musician Depedro. Both events will take place at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre, with free admission until full capacity is reached.
Photographer Cristina García Rodero and musician Depedro, the stage name of Jairo Zavala, will headline the first two meetings of the new edition of the cultural cycle 'Torremolinos and Giants'. The programme, promoted by the Torremolinos City Council in collaboration with the Unicaja Foundation and the Meliá Costa del Sol Hotel, will be held at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre and will feature free admission.
The first event will be on September 3 at 19:00 with Cristina García Rodero, National Photography Award winner and Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. The author will review her career and offer a commentary on the projection of 'Hidden Spain', the work that established her internationally.
The project began in 1973 when a scholarship from the Juan March Foundation allowed her to travel through towns across Spain to document festivals, rituals, and traditions. The result was published in 1989 as 'Hidden Spain', a book that was recognised as Book of the Year at the Arles Photography Festival and marked a turning point in Spanish documentary photography.
García Rodero has been awarded the National Photography Award in 1996 and a World Press Photo in the Art category. In 2009, she became a full member of the Magnum agency, being the first Spanish woman to join the historic photographic cooperative. Her gaze has extended to countries such as Haiti and India, and she has portrayed both the current Kings and thousands of anonymous individuals.
The second meeting will be on November 11 at 19:00 with Depedro, the musical project of Jairo Zavala. The artist will participate in a conversation and offer a brief acoustic concert, in an intimate format that seeks to bring his career closer to the audience.
Depedro began in 2008 with his first album, recorded in Tucson, Arizona, alongside the American band Calexico. That collaboration was the seed of a career that has drawn influences from Latin America, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the United States. His discography includes titles such as 'Paper Clouds', 'The Incredible Story of a Good Man', 'The Passenger', 'Once Upon a Time', 'Machine of Pity', 'Before Night Falls', and 'A Perfect Place'.
The musician has performed on all five continents, with albums released in over thirty countries and collaborations with artists from different cultures. He has also explored cinema with the documentary 'Casamance', the result of a musical journey to Senegal.
Both meetings will be coordinated by journalist Alberto Gómez and will open an edition that will feature more names from Spanish culture. Previous artists in the cycle have included Luz Casal, Imanol Arias, Rosa Montero, Pedro Piqueras, El Kanka, Laura García Lorca, Lorenzo Silva, Javier Gomá, Ben Clark, María Barranco, and Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada.
