The Town Hall of Torremolinos presents the Medals of Honour of the City to the Brotherhood of San Miguel Archangel, Antonio José Aguilar Jáuregui, José Luque Navajas, and posthumously to José Manuel Sánchez Gonzalo.
The Town Hall of Torremolinos awarded the Medals of Honour of the City this Sunday during the 38th anniversary of the autonomy of the municipality, celebrated every 27th of September since 1988. The mayor, Margarita del Cid, presided over the ceremony alongside the Municipal Corporation.
The honourees include Antonio José Aguilar Jáuregui, a member of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), who participated in the USAR search and rescue team deployed in Venezuela; flamencologist José Luque Navajas, whose family reached an agreement with the Town Hall to incorporate the Casa de los Navajas into the municipal heritage; the Brotherhood of San Miguel Archangel, the patron of the locality; and, posthumously, businessman José Manuel Sánchez Gonzalo, owner of the historic restaurant Doña Francisquita.
Del Cid defended in her speech a system of regional and local financing that addresses the reality of tourist cities. “We do not ask for privileges. We ask to be able to fulfil our responsibilities on equal terms,” stated the mayor, who called for consideration of not only the registered population but also the real population that Torremolinos supports for much of the year.
The mayor recalled that the municipality lost its independence in 1924 due to economic difficulties and regained it in 1988. “There is no real autonomy without sufficient resources to exercise it,” she pointed out, before noting that the Town Hall is working to reduce its financial dependency. “Every step we take to clean up the municipal accounts is a step we take to decide with greater freedom,” she added.
In terms of actions, Del Cid mentioned the new Plaza de la Nogalera, the Isabel Manoja Community Development Centre, the recovery of the Casa de María Barrabino, and the future social block of Calvario, on the grounds of the former Virgen de la Esperanza. She also mentioned the new urban planning, which must regulate the city's growth.
“It is our responsibility to turn autonomy into solvency, into good services, into recovered spaces, into educational opportunities, and into projects capable of inspiring future generations,” concluded the mayor.
The event took place in Torremolinos on 27th September 2026, the date on which the municipality commemorates its establishment as an independent town hall.
