The Torremolinos Town Hall presents the recognitions of the World Tourism Day to the Meliá Costa del Sol Hotel and the Puente Real Hotel for their 50th anniversary, to the agency Opentours for its 60 years of activity, and posthumously to the hospitality entrepreneur Antonio Cerdán, a historic figure behind Casa Antonio, in Bajondillo.
The Torremolinos Town Hall awarded this Friday the recognitions of the World Tourism Day to the Meliá Costa del Sol Hotel and the Puente Real Hotel, both for their 50th anniversary, to the agency Opentours for its 60 years of activity, and posthumously to the hospitality entrepreneur Antonio Cerdán Céspedes, a historic figure behind Casa Antonio, in Bajondillo.
The mayor, Margarita del Cid, highlighted the importance of the sector in the city during the event: "A tribute to a strategic sector. A sector that generates well-being, drives development and creates opportunities for our city. And one that we must care for and defend. Because investing in tourism is investing in our present, our future, and the opportunities for those who live, work, and start businesses here."
The Meliá Costa del Sol opened in 1976 and has 540 rooms spread across two buildings. In May 2026, a comprehensive renovation will be completed that has updated all the rooms, with terraces and sea views, as well as incorporating improvements in sustainability and technology. The mayor remembered the hotel’s director since 2009, Carlos Franco, and noted that the establishment "is a true tourist institution of our city."
The Puente Real Hotel also celebrates its half-century in 2026. It was founded by Amadeo Sabat, who continues to lead it alongside his children Alejandro and Eva, with Isabel Cívico as director for the past twelve years. The establishment, located on the beachfront of the Paseo Marítimo, has 473 rooms and a staff of over 150 professionals.
Opentours, established as Viajes Benamar on 28 July 1966, celebrates its 60 years with professional meetings in Spain and Portugal that gathered 1,200 professionals from the sector in June. Its CEO, Ángel Martín, son of the founder, Antonio Martín, summarises the evolution of the company from postal, telephone, and teletype bookings to digital marketing. The company maintains its headquarters on Calle de la Cruz in Torremolinos.
