The works for the new recycling point in San Pedro Alcántara, covering 3,400 square metres and with a budget of €1.2 million, will begin next Monday in the Industrial Estate.
The new recycling point in San Pedro Alcántara will become a reality in six months. The works will kick off next Monday on Malta Street, next to the ITV station, in the second phase of the Industrial Estate. The facility, spanning 3,400 square metres, will have a budget of €1.2 million and will allow local residents to dispose of household and special waste without having to travel to Marbella or Casares.
A service that has been requested since the fire at the previous recycling point
The previous provisional recycling point in San Pedro Alcántara had to be closed several years ago after suffering a fire. Since then, residents have been forced to travel miles to dispose of electrical appliances, household goods, or other materials that cannot go in the ordinary bin. This situation, according to deputy mayor Javier García, led to the emergence of uncontrolled dumping in the area.
The councillor has reminded that the project has completed all its administrative procedures and that the preliminary processes, such as safety and health coordination and technical direction, have already been approved. "The previous provisional recycling point had to be closed several years ago after suffering a fire, a circumstance that forced residents to travel to the facilities in Marbella or to the treatment plant in Casares," García pointed out.
Modern facilities and video surveillance
The new facility will have a loading and sorting area, specific containers for special waste —such as electrical and electronic devices—, covered storage areas, a control booth for public assistance, and parking for users. The plot, distributed over two platforms, will be fully urbanised. Additionally, it will feature a video surveillance system to enhance control and ensure the proper functioning of the facilities.
"The aim is to facilitate recycling and provide a nearby alternative for local residents for the proper management of waste, avoiding trips to other municipalities and helping to reduce uncontrolled dumping," García added. The waste deposited will be collected by municipal services and transported to authorised treatment plants.
An investment of €1.2 million with a six-month deadline
The works have a budget of €1.2 million and an execution period of six months. The recycling point will be located on Malta Street, next to the ITV station, in the Industrial Estate of San Pedro Alcántara. Once completed, residents of the district will be able to deposit waste that requires special treatment, such as electrical appliances, household goods, batteries, or domestic rubble, without needing to travel to Marbella or the Casares plant.
The news comes as a relief to the residents of San Pedro Alcántara, who have seen illegal dumping proliferate on the outskirts for years. With this new infrastructure, recycling becomes more accessible, putting an end to a long wait. However, it will be necessary to wait six months to inaugurate it. In the meantime, residents will still have to make the trip to Marbella or Casares, albeit with the hope that next summer everything will be easier.
