The Marbella Half Marathon, taking place this Sunday the 27th, debuts a cardioprotection system with twelve professionals along the route. The event reaches a record of 3,893 entrants across all its categories.
The Marbella Half Marathon will feature a specific cardioprotection operation for the first time over its 21-kilometre course, as reported by Diario Sur. The system consists of twelve professionals divided into four teams of two, stationed between kilometres 0 and 5, 5 and 10, 10 and 15, and 15 and 21, along with two personnel on bicycles and two members at the Operational Coordination Centre (CECOP).
The Sports Councillor, Lisandro Vieytes, presented the operation on Tuesday alongside the president of the Sierra Blanca Ultratrail Sports Club, Fran Viegas. The event, taking place this Sunday the 27th, “has reached a record figure of 3,893 entrants across its various categories,” the councillor noted.
“We want the nearly 4,000 participants to engage in sports safely, focusing solely on running, enjoying the event, and having a great day”
The four teams operating within the circuit will have semi-automatic external defibrillators (DESA) and first aid supplies, and their members are trained in Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and the use of these devices. The distribution was established following a prior study of the route and its access difficulties.
The two bicycle units will allow for quicker access to certain points along the course. One will cover the Half Marathon, while the second will initially attend to the 5-kilometre Charity Run and, once completed, will join the main event's operation.
The medical service includes an Advanced Life Support ambulance with a technician, doctor, and nurse from 8:00 to 12:00; another with the same team from 8:00 to 13:00; two Advanced Life Support units with technicians from 8:00 to 12:00; a critical care area from 8:00 to 12:00, and three rapid response motorcycles. The entire operation will be connected to CECOP and coordinated with the Local Police and Civil Protection.

Viegas explained that the members of the four teams will move by running or walking according to the needs of each section and will maintain constant communication with the coordination centre to immediately activate the necessary resources and facilitate, if needed, the arrival of an ambulance or the transfer of a participant to a medical facility.
Of the 3,893 entrants, 3,300 will compete in the individual Half Marathon, 165 in the relay category, and 428 in the 5-kilometre Charity Run. The event will bring together athletes from 27 nationalities. Among the individual race participants, there are 1,923 men (64 percent) and 1,077 women (36 percent). By origin, 1,559 will be foreigners and 1,441 nationals.
The 2026 edition introduces a new route: the start will be from the Marbella Arch, progressing along the Promenade and, from the Roman Bridge, along the N-340 towards Puerto Banús. After the turnaround point, runners will return along the Promenade to complete the 21.1 kilometres. The new layout improves participant flow and prevents them from sharing lanes in both directions in some sections of the Coastal Path.
The day will conclude at the Park of the Mediterranean, where runners and their families can participate in a post-competition celebration.
