The municipalities of Mijas and Fuengirola have signed an agreement to maintain the horizontal signage of the roads they share. Fuengirola will carry out the first works in 2026, starting this Sunday on La Unión street.

The municipalities of Mijas and Fuengirola have signed an agreement to preserve and repaint the horizontal signage of the streets bordering both municipalities, where one pavement belongs to one locality and the opposite one to the other. The agreement regulates the collaboration between the two entities and establishes that each year one of the councils will carry out the work.

The document was presented by the Councillor for Infrastructure of Mijas, Juan José Torres, and his Fuengirola counterpart, José Sánchez. The agreement has a duration of four years, extendable for another four, and covers the repainting of pedestrian crossings, longitudinal lines, road markings, symbols, and the rest of the existing signage elements on the shared roads.

The area of action includes La Unión street, from its intersection with Camino de Coín and Camino de las Cañadas to its junction with the Carretera de Mijas. According to Sánchez, the first painting works on that same street are scheduled for this Sunday.

In this first year, Fuengirola will be responsible for carrying out the works, and in the following years, the tasks will alternate between the two municipalities. The agreement stipulates that the administration responsible for each year must provide the necessary materials, labour, temporary signage during the works, and all the human and material resources needed for its proper development.

Torres framed the agreement in the collaboration between both cities:

“The well-being of our residents is a priority. I am convinced that this will not be the first agreement we reach, but that collaboration will continue between the two municipalities.”

For his part, the Fuengirola councillor pointed out that both municipalities share a good number of linear metres of public roads and added:

“We have been trying to reach agreements on maintenance for years. It had to be now, with a Mijas government sensitive to this need and proactive, that it will become a reality.”

The repainting works on La Unión street will begin this Sunday and will be carried out this time by the Fuengirola City Council, which will provide materials and workers. The agreement extends until 2030 and can be extended for another four years.
